People will hate you for the money you make. They will dislike you for demanding. It will trigger them to see you thrive and embrace 100% of yourself — exactly as you are.
But let’s ask: do people really hate us? I mean, to hate someone, to dislike them or to shame them for their expression, wealth, or their way of life … one has to at least know the person, right?
And when people see us on social media, or read our WhatsApp statutes, or let’s say an email like this, they only have access to a certain small segment of our life.
They don’t truly know us. Infact no one can. Until they have lived our lives. Walked in our shoes.
So how come are their reactions towards us so strong?
And the truth is: all of these people are hurting. They all have had wounds around money. They’ve been told way back in their childhood that they can’t be themselves.
They are socialised to believe that they must play small, believe less, fear the wealthy, and protect their reputation over their own wildness.
I’ll give you an example. When I went to the psychiatrist for the first time and he sent me to a counsellor (who was basically his wife), she said, “Gaurav, please don’t people about your real identity. Don’t tell them about your queerness and sexuality, if you want people not to hate you. You are studying to be a doctor, you must protect your reputation at all costs.”
I was just 19. Imagine, what must have gone inside my psyche. The kind of fear, the kind of conditioning. It wasn’t just that I couldn’t be myself, but I was taught time and over again that I must also be ashamed of who I was inside. And that I must never let this monster out.
What happens in such a scenario? When you come across anyone who shows you those wounded parts; you hate them. Right?
That is why homophobia exists in this world.
Similarly, there is xenophobia. When we cannot accept and absorb someone who is different from us. Just difference. In a world where diversity is the fundamental basis of life.
So take it as given. The more you make money. The more you shine. The more you come out into the world exactly as you are, the more triggers will go through the roof.
There will be more and more people who will call you immoral, unethical, looter and out of integrity (I get countless such emails and DMs).
This episode is an antidote to that. You will find the most radical and the most compassionate solution to approach this.
After listening to this episode (and some of you have like to do that multiple times): you would never ever go back to feeling guilty for asking, for charging and for deserting the money you do.
